Jesse Alaniz /County government is supposed to be one of the last lines of defense in protecting the People’s rights

Edward Abbey once said, “The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government — lest it come to dominate our lives and interests.” County government is supposed to be one of the last lines of defense in protecting the People’s rights according to the Federalist Papers, but, there are those who will tell you with an authoritative voice that it is their solemnly sworn duty to create new laws that will make criminals out of innocent citizens in order that they may impose fines to generate revenue. Perhaps even raise fees to pay for those six figure salaries and pensions in order that we may prevent the politicians from being poor. They may even harp with a louder voice that the Constitution gives them the power to raise money for roads even though a recent article stated that Illinois pays twice the national average per mile for new road construction or road repair.

Samuel Adams wrote – “If ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.” Into which one Stephen Balich enters the scene. It is Balich who has been fighting an uphill battle alone in resisting Bible Reed along the Will County Democrats and one  other member calling himself Republican to utilize the Land Use Department’s aerial photography without a proper warrant for the purposes of initiating ordinance violations. But this is more than a victory for Balich. It is a lesson for all citizens and for the media who has an obsession to loathe those labeled as extremists for refusing to compromise.

The Land Use Department was created for one purpose and it is now tainted as a department that was almost used to spy on people’s property without a warrant via witch hunt tactics without any restraints or restrictions. Charles de Montesquieu wrote in his Spirit of the Law “When the legislative and executive powers are united in the same person, or in the same body of magistrates, there can be no liberty; because apprehensions may arise, lest the same monarch or senate should enact tyrannical laws, to execute them in a tyrannical manner.” Balich wisely recognized that the county was about to execute County ordinances by utilizing a department that was created for a different purpose. Tyranny always gains a foothold when governments begin hijacking departments that were created purpose then utilized to make criminals out of citizens to collect revenue.

Balich was finally successful in having the following order executed – Executive Order 14-30, Aerial Photography Prohibited – Lawrence M. Walsh, will County Executive, hereby prohibits the Land Use Department and its personnel from using aerial photography to initiate an internal Land Use complaint of an ordinance violation. Dated May 14, 2014 and signed by Will County Executive Lawrence M. Walsh

As to the Republicans who sided with Mr. Reed I would remind them of Abraham Lincoln’s words “To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men.” As to Mr. Balich, Thomas Paine wrote “It is the duty of the patriot to protect his country from its government.” Well done Mr. Balich, well done.
